History of Kumbh Mela
The history of Kumbh Mela dates back to the epoch of ocean churning ceremony. According to the Hindu scriptures after the churning of the ocean by the Devas and Danivas 9 jems were darned. The churning process was done with the help of Matriarchal Mountain and Vasuki Naga. Among these jems one most precious was Amrit (Nectar). Lord Vishnu was holding the pot and it dropped at four places where the present Kumbh Melas are arranged at a span of 12 years.
Kumbh literally signifies pot or pitcher and media is fair. Thus Kumbh Mela signifies pitcher festival to commemorate the divine event. This now a days is the world’s largest gathering of mankind.

When was first Kumbh Mela held ?
It is Lord to find the occurrences of the Kumbh Mela in a chronological way. The scriptures mention about the Kumbh celebrations and of the contemporary rulers taking part in it. It is recorded by Hiuan Tsang in his travel accounts that Harsh Vardhan used to come to attend the great occurrence of Kumbh Mela and used to open his treasures for charity and alms for the common folks.
Similar to Harsh Vandhan many other previous and following rulers and tradesmen involved themselves in Kumbh festivals. The recorded Kumbh Mela event at Allahabad started in 1870 in British rule. Though in 1858 it was tried first but could not take place on account of the 1857 revolt. Similarly in the 18th century, the Kumbh Mela Nasik was initiated by the Maratha ruler Ranoji Shinde.

Why Purna Kumbh is held 12 years later?
It is believed that the Devasur Sangram fight between Gods and demons lasted for 12 heavenly days. One celestial day is considered similar to 1 human year. That is the reason every 12 years later Purna Kumbh is arranged to mark the event. The celebration is held on the exact and holy position of the sun, the Moon, and Jupiter.
