Shri Hari Mandir Sahib was constructed by the fourth Guru Ramdais ji the Gurudwara was laid with Gold by the Sikh emperor Maharaja Ranjeet Singh. The gold covering of the sanctum sanctorum is the reason d’tere for the name Golden temple.
No Vehicle is now allowed near the Gurudwara. Just 200 meters from the Gurudwara is the multi level car parking. The devotees have to park their car at this car parking and can either walk or take electric rickshaws to reach the Golden temple complex.
The Golden Temple Gurudwara is open for all humanity. There is no restriction of any sort related to caste/religion at the Gurudwara. Every devotee while visiting the complex has to adhere to simple rules.
1. Remove your Shoes before entering the complex ,The shoes are stored at the shoe locker “Jora Ghar”this facility is available free of cost near the main gate.
2. Cover your head with a simple handkerchief/cap before entering the complex no person without a head cover is allowed inside the complex.
3. No intoxicant of any sort is allowed inside the complex.
4. Leave your cigarettes/lighters/tobacco in your luggage before entering the complex.
5. If you are carrying luggage please deposit the same at the locker (this facility is available free of cost).
The Gurudwara has four gates opening out to four respective directions thus signifying that the entry to the complex is open for all the Varna (Brahmin/Kshatriya/Vaish/Shudra) there is no differentiation of religion /colour/ any sort for entering the complex.
Golden temple usually has lots of devotees visiting every day. The weekend and festivals are specially crowded and usually it may take around an hour wait to enter into the Darbar Sahib from the inner gate to the Gurudwara.
Unlike some temples in India where you can cut across the crowd there is no such mechanism at the Golden temple, all devotees have to wait for their turn to seek the bleessings of Guru sahib. No VIP entry is Possible at the Golden temple.
Remember if you want to enter the sanctum Santorum and and bow before the Guru Sahib then take the Quee/row to the left. The row on the right side doesn’t leads you to the inner part of the complex and this for those people who are short of time and want to seek the blessings in hurry. This row to the right leads to the back side of Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji where you can seek the blessings.
According to Sikh mythology a bath at the sarovar/pond at Sri Hari mandir Sahib washes all the accumulated sins of the devotees thus the devotees become clean. Both physically as well as spiritually.
Near the Darshni Deori (Gate to the inner temple) are the windows where you can make cash offering at the Golden temple. In return of the offering you get the Kadah Prashad in a stain less steel platter. You have to carry this to the inside of the temple where a part is offered and rest you get as a blessing.
The seropah or the small piece of textile which can be used as head cover is offered by the Gurudwara as a mark of respect and recognition. The seropah is offered to those devotees who either offer “Rumalla” or book an akhand path sahib or offer Kadaah Parshad.
The Golden temple has many sarai or hostels for the devotees. Prior reservation and more information can be had from the official website of Sri Hari mandir sahib Gurudwara. There are NRI hostels where proper air conditioned accommodation for Non Resident Indian (NRI) devotees is available the reservation information for the same can be had from the official website. Apart from the complex there are many other Gurudwaras in the Amritsar city where room and accommodation for the devotees is readily available.
The Wagah border is 32 Kms away from Amritsar is very well connected with wagah border through a four lane excellent highway. It takes no more than 45 minutes to reach the wagah border.
Multiple options are available as conveyance you can hire a taxi for the Wagah flag ceremony from Amritsar. Shared taxis and coaches are also readily available from Amritsar
There is no ticket levied on watching the flag ceremony. Owing to the high popularity lots of people nowadays come to watch this ceremony so we advise you to reach easily and occupy a vantage seating position to watch the paradise. The seating is on first come bases only VIP gallery is reserved for army offices, foreign tourist and high level dignitaries.
There is no government parking at the Wagah Border. The vehicles are stopped around a kilometer before the border. The parking is arranged on payment basis by the private operators. Food and refreshment stalls are also present at these parking. From the parking you have to walk all the way up to the ceremony area. Some rickshaws are also available but they are less compared to the high number of tourist. Some restaurants like “Sada pind” are also there en-route Amritsar to Wagah.
