History of Agra

Agra, located on the banks of the Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh, is a city with a rich and multi-layered history. Though references to the region appear in ancient epics like the Mahabharata—where it was known as Agravana—the foundation of modern Agra is credited to Sultan Sikandar Lodi of the Delhi Sultanate, who established the city in 1504. Under Sikandar Lodi and his successors, Agra quickly grew as an important seat of power and culture.

The city's golden era began under the Mughal Empire, starting with Emperor Babur, who captured Agra after defeating Ibrahim Lodi in the First Battle of Panipat in 1526. Babur famously laid out the Aram Bagh, India’s first formal Persian-style garden, on the banks of the Yamuna. His grandson Akbar built the towering Red Fort (Agra Fort) and made Agra his capital, further establishing the city as a center for learning, arts, commerce, and religion. Akbar also commissioned the new city of Fatehpur Sikri on Agra’s outskirts, which flourished briefly as the Mughal capital.

Akbar’s successors, Jahangir and Shah Jahan, enhanced Agra’s grandeur with further architectural splendor, most notably the Taj Mahal. Constructed by Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj Mahal remains the city’s—and India’s—most iconic monument. Later, Shah Jahan shifted the Mughal capital to Delhi, but Agra retained its prominence. During Aurangzeb’s rule, the capital briefly returned to Agra before he moved it to the Deccan.

In the 18th and early 19th centuries, Agra experienced a period of decline and changed hands between the Marathas, Jats, and eventually the British in 1803. Under British rule, Agra became a major administrative center and was the site of significant events during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. After India’s independence in 1947, Agra transitioned into a key industrial town and a global tourist destination, thanks primarily to the enduring allure of the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Fatehpur Sikri—all UNESCO World Heritage Sites today.

Agra’s historical legacy is visible in its stunning architecture, bustling markets, gardens, and centuries-old traditions—a testament to its central role in the rise and fall of dynasties that shaped northern India.
