History of Jaipur

Jaipur, the vibrant capital of Rajasthan, is steeped in both history and architectural splendor. Founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II—a mathematician, astronomer, and warrior king of the Kachhwaha Rajput dynasty—Jaipur was established as India’s first planned city. Jaipur was carefully divided into nine blocks, with broad avenues intersecting at right angles—two blocks reserved for state buildings and palaces, and seven for public use. Strong fortification walls and seven impressive city gates provided security and definition to the new capital.

The city earned its famous nickname, the “Pink City,” in 1876 when Maharaja Ram Singh ordered the entire old city to be painted pink—traditionally a color symbolizing hospitality—to welcome the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII.
